In the world of railway engineering, there are feats that leave you speechless. The one achieved by China on January 2 undoubtedly belongs to this category. In just 9 hours, and by mobilizing more than 1,000 workers, the Chinese authorities managed to connect a new high-speed railway section that will reduce a seven-hour journey to just an hour and a half.
A titanic operation carried out with clockwork precision
The operation took place on the Hangzhou-Wenzhou high-speed line, one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in the country. The intervention consisted of connecting a new section of track to the existing network, a delicate operation requiring millimeter precision.
More than 1,000 workers were mobilized simultaneously, equipped with heavy machinery and guided by state-of-the-art technology. The entire operation was completed in a single night, between 10:30 PM and 7:30 AM, in order to minimize disruption to existing rail traffic.
The new line, once fully operational, will allow travelers to cover the distance between Hangzhou and Wenzhou in approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, compared to the current 7 hours by conventional train. This represents a considerable time saving for the millions of passengers who travel this route each year.
China continues to expand its high-speed rail network at an impressive pace. The country already has the largest high-speed rail network in the world, with more than 42,000 kilometers of lines in operation. And with projects like this one, Beijing shows no signs of slowing down.
